What This Course Is About

This is a textile technology course for dressmakers, not theory for theory’s sake.

You’ll learn:

  • how fabrics are made,

  • how fibers behave,

  • and how material properties affect sewing, pressing, wear, and longevity.

Instead of relying on intuition or marketing labels, you’ll understand what to expect from a fabric before you even cut it.

What You’ll Learn

Textile Basics — Made Simple

  • What fabric is made of: fibers → yarns → fabric

  • How weave and structure affect drape, density, and strength

  • Why two fabrics with the same name can behave completely differently

Fiber Types & Properties

You’ll clearly understand the three main fiber groups:

  • Natural fibers

  • Regenerated (semi-synthetic / manmade) fibers

  • Synthetic fibers

And how each group behaves in real sewing conditions.

Natural Fibers

Learn the characteristics of fibers from:

  • Animal origin: wool, cashmere, mohair, alpaca, silk, angora, camel hair, horsehair, and more

  • Plant origin: cotton, linen (flax), hemp, bamboo, ramie, jute, sisal, kapok, abaca, and others

Regenerated (Semi-Synthetic) Fibers

  • Protein fibers (milk casein, soybean protein)

  • Manmade fibers like viscose (rayon) and acetate

  • Why these fabrics are often eco-friendly and behave similarly to natural materials

Synthetic Fibers

  • How synthetics are produced

  • Why they shouldn’t be dismissed

  • When synthetics outperform natural fibers in real garments

Fabric Properties You’ll Learn to Read Instantly

  • Thickness and weight (light, medium, heavy)

  • Wrinkle resistance

  • Shrinkage behavior

  • Elasticity and resilience

  • How fabrics react to pressing, stitching, and wear

Once you understand these properties, fabric choice becomes logical, predictable, and stress-free.

Why This Course Is Essential

Many sewing problems don’t come from poor technique —
they come from wrong fabric choices.

This course helps you:

  • Stop wasting money on unsuitable materials

  • Avoid disappointment after hours of sewing

  • Let go of myths like “natural fabrics are always better”

  • Match fabric behavior to garment design with confidence

The Result

After completing this course, you will:

  • Confidently choose fabrics for any project

  • Understand labels, fiber content, and fabric names

  • Predict how a fabric will behave before sewing

  • Work faster, smarter, and more professionally

  • Feel calm and confident in any fabric store

Who This Course Is For

  • Beginners who want a strong foundation

  • Experienced sewists tired of fabric mistakes

  • Dressmakers working with bridal, evening, or casual garments

  • Anyone who wants to stop guessing — and start choosing fabrics like a professional

Fabric knowledge is not optional — it’s the foundation of successful dressmaking.
This course gives you that foundation in a clear, practical, and usable way.
