Jessie Buckley — elegant minimalism by Chanel

To an untrained viewer, Jessie Buckley’s outfit may seem strange with an unsuitable color combination. But such looks are especially appropriate at the Oscars, where fashion often becomes part of a cultural dialogue. This is not just a dress, but a visual quote — a way to refer to Hollywood history while simultaneously presenting a modern perspective on it.

Jessie Buckley and Grace Kelly

In this diptych, we see an interesting dialogue of eras: on the left — Jessie Buckley at the 2026 Academy Awards in a Chanel dress, on the right — an archival look of Grace Kelly from the 1956 Oscars.

The modern dress is not an exact copy, but a thoughtful interpretation. Chanel preserves the key idea of the original and translates it into a contemporary language.

In the 2026 version, the same principle of the “volume panel” in the upper part is preserved, but the character of execution changes: softness gives way to a rigid, architectural form. Color also becomes part of the concept — instead of a light, almost bridal look, a bold combination of red and pink appears. The skirt loses excessive volume and becomes lighter, closer to a modern silhouette.

This example clearly shows how modern fashion works with archives: a recognizable element is taken, and the rest of the form is rethought. The aesthetics of the 1950s with its softness and romance is transformed into a stricter and more minimalist language of the 2020s.

The look can be described as modern couture minimalism: without overload of details, with an emphasis on silhouette and quality of execution.

The bodice is laconic and devoid of excessive elements. A clean neckline line, soft fit, and absence of visual “noise” create a feeling of calmness and thoughtfulness. Structurally, this is likely a corset or semi-corset base with precisely calibrated seams and hidden support. Its task is to create an ideal foundation without drawing attention to the construction itself.

The silhouette can be attributed to the column / semi-fitted category. It elongates the figure, forms a clear vertical, and emphasizes natural proportions.

The proportions are built according to a classic scheme: a restrained top, a softly defined waist, and a bottom continuing the vertical. This creates a feeling of a calm, elongated, and harmonious silhouette.

The main compositional technique is a clean vertical combined with the absence of unnecessary accents. Unlike more dramatic looks, there is no contrast of textures, complex decoration, or visual division. This is what makes the dress elegant, modern, and “expensive” in perception.

In the Dressmaking Academy library, there are several courses that can help recreate such a silhouette: “Dress with Lace Straps and Full Skirt - Remote Sewing”, “Lace Bodice and Full Skirt Wedding Dress”, “Wedding Dress with Deep Neckline and a Whole Piece Train”.

As a corset base, you can use patterns and technologies from the courses: “Corset with 2 Curves”, “Wedding Dress with Detachable Full Skirt”.
